»A sports discipline that had shaped generations of excellent handball players in our town became extinct!«
In 2000, these were the words of several handball fans. A sport that used to be one of the most favourable sports activities practiced in primary schools with the youngest generations, and then all until elderly generations, sadly fell into oblivion.
Upon the initiative of two successful players from former generations, a small number of handball fans set the following objective:
»LET’S BRING HANDBALL BACK TO LIFE IN OUR TOWN!«
The Marof sports hall was a “nest” already at that time, and we invited the youngest from handball clubs in primary schools and also former handball players from Novo mesto who waited for their second chance to engage in training and games. To strengthen and refresh the team, we also invited players from the nearby towns of Krško, Dobova and Trebnje.
SEASON 2000/2001 (AUTUMN) – QUALIFICATIONS FOR 2nd SLOVENIAN LEAGUE
The Slovenian Handball Federation soon heard about us and they made it possible for us to appear in the qualifications for entering into the 2nd Slovenian handball league. Although being a new, young, inexperienced and not well-trained team, we succeeded, through hard work, to be classified in the 2nd Slovenian handball league already in the autumn season 2000/2001.

SEASON 2000/2001 (SPRING) – 2ND SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE
The victory on the domestic grounds was the beginning of our matches in the 2nd league of the spring season 2000/2001, which was of decisive importance for future contests. In the 8th round we were ranked on top of the 2nd league ladder and kept this position all until the end of the championship. We finished the contest as champions of the 2nd Slovenian handball league. This big triumph was even bigger as we knew we made it – we realised the dreams which we did not dare think of half a year ago:

SEASON 2001/2002 – OUR PRESENTATION IN 1B SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE
How much the boys wished to play handball in our town is shown in their strong will, hard work and willingness to give certain things up. They succeeded to be ranked into 1B Slovenian handball league already in the first year of contest. We intensively started to organise competitions for juniors and for senior boys and to work with primary school pupils.
At this moment enthusiasm, strong will and hard work were no longer sufficient; we also needed some financial resources to compete in the league.
We were lucky and glad to attract the timber company NOVOLES from Straža and they started acting as our major sponsor. In exchange for their assistance we promised to decently represent their name across Slovenia, and possibly also abroad. Our goal for that particular season was to stay in the league, and the seventh place was a great success for us, if we consider this was our first contesting year.
The junior team also performed in the 2nd league – second group and, in this first contesting year, succeeded to be ranked fifth, out of seven participating teams.
This was a great a success for the junior team, since we knew other teams had a stronger tradition and well-organised schools of handball.
A similar success was also achieved by our senior boys who occupied the fourth place in the contest category »Senior Boys A«.
The club is aware that without proper efforts engaged in working with young people in primary schools in the Novo mesto region and wider, we shall not reach any success, therefore we organised several tournaments for them.

SEASON 2002/2003 –1A SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE PROJECT
Based on our previous work and success we realised we were on the right path. The management of the club and also the players wished to go one step forward in the 2002/2003 season, which means we would classify into 1A Slovenian Handball League (1A SHL).
We decided to embark on this project also as we wished to carry the names of our sponsors out into wider Slovenia and possibly also Europe. Entering the 1A SHL would create additional promotion for Novo mesto and the Dolenjska region, which was until then represented only by Trimo from Trebnje.
The project primarily called for staff reinforcement, as this would enable adequate organisation and undisturbed work at all levels.
In this particular season we became acquainted with all our competitors and saw that it would not be possible to advance into a higher rank with the existing players only. We needed at least four high quality players, and with them the club’s management could assure classifications into 1A SHL; however to do this, we needed more substantial financial resources.

We made it! We can say with pride that it was just our 3rd anniversary and we already joined the Slovenian handball elite:
we were classified into 1A Slovenian handball league.
The success achieved is the fruit of our hard work, and we also have to thank all our sponsors who believed in us and offered the necessary financial support. Only in this way we could successfully organise training, contests and other activities and succeeded to create a satisfying team with certain top-ranked handball players.
SEASON 2003/2004 - 1A SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE
Playing in 1A SHL, within the 2003/2004 season, was a great challenge for us, and above all a huge responsibility, as our players from Novo mesto confronted, for the first time, some elite Slovenian teams, like Celje Pivovarna Laško, Gorenje etc. It was not easy for us. We really played a few top games, but also failed on a few occasions. Nevertheless we can say, at the end of the 2003/2004 season, that we kept our promises. We stayed in the league, occupying the 10th place.

SEASON 2004/2005 - 1A SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE
In the 2004/2005 season we also showed, as a young and inexperienced team, that we can play with the best Slovenian teams. We played a few rather good games, while the most valuable one was our victory in the local derby, when we played with Trimo from Trebnje in the Marof sports hall in front of the local spectators.
There were some bitter experiences on the local grounds for sure, when we lost a few already won games in the last minutes of the game. However, we pulled ourselves together and secured our stay in the best Slovenian handball league.

SEASON 2006/2007 - 1B SLOVENIAN HANDBALL LEAGUE
In the above mentioned season we set an optimistic goal with our senior team, which is classification into 1A Slovenian handball league. With our junior team we were candidates for being classified in the highest contesting class until the last round; however luck deserted us then, and we finished 3rd in the end of the championship.
Our biggest contesting success recently has been the classification for the Slovenia Cup tournament, where we won the fourth place.
We devote special attention, in MRK KRKA (our junior team), to working with junior selections. At the national level the following selections have participated in this season: juniors, cadets (year 1991), senior boys A (year 1992), senior boys B (year 1993), junior boys A (year 1994), and junior boys B (year 1995). We are proud to say that junior boys A and B have classified into the final tournament and were finally ranked 7th (out of 35 teams). The club is focusing great attention to work with primary schools, where we try to make young people enthusiastic about this sport. Mini handball has gained great popularity, and we are participating in tournaments organised across Slovenia. At a strong tournament in Zagorje we won the 2nd place.
We have participated, with our junior selections, also at international tournaments. Junior boys B ranked 4th at a strong international tournament in Rijeka, while senior boys A won 3rd place in Zagreb.
